Card cash back
Executive 2%
The card's cash back rates
| Where you spend | Cash back |
|---|---|
| Gas at Costco | 5% |
| Other eligible gas and EV charging | 4% |
| Restaurants and eligible travel, including Costco Travel | 3% |
| Costco and Costco.com | 2% |
| Everything else | 1% |
The 5% and 4% gas rates share one limit: the first $7,000 a year of gas and EV charging combined (about $583 a month). After that, gas earns 1%. Restaurant and travel cash back has no limit.
If your gas goes over the limit, the calculator splits it between Costco gas and other gas in proportion to what you spend on each. Your real split depends on the order you buy.
Stacking the card with Executive
If you're an Executive member, Costco purchases can earn twice: 2% from the card and 2% from the Executive reward, so about 4% back in total. Gas is the exception. It earns the card's 5%, but Costco doesn't pay the Executive 2% on gas. The Executive reward is capped at $1,250 a year and has its own list of exclusions; see the 2% reward, explained.

Costco credit card benefits
Besides cash back, Citi lists these benefits for the Costco Anywhere Visa:
- No annual fee while you have an active, paid Costco membership, and no fee for authorized users.
- No foreign transaction fees, and it's a Visa, so it works wherever Visa is accepted.
- Damage & Theft Purchase Protection: may pay for repairs or a refund if something you bought with the card is damaged or stolen within 120 days (90 days for New York residents).
- Worldwide car rental insurance: you may be covered for theft or damage to a rental car when you pay with the card and decline the rental company's collision cover. See Costco car rental.
- 24/7 travel and roadside assistance: Citi arranges help; you pay for any services you use.
- Extras: free access to your FICO score, Citi Entertainment ticket access, and Citi Flex Pay.
It no longer adds warranty years; see the question below. Check Citi's benefit terms for limits and exclusions before you rely on any of these.
How to apply for the Costco credit card
- Have a Costco membership in your name. Citi requires a current membership to apply. See whether a membership pays off.
- Check if you pre-qualify on Citi's Costco card page. Citi says pre-qualification uses a soft credit inquiry with no impact on your credit score.
- Apply on the same page. Citi sets your interest rate by creditworthiness.
The Costco business credit card
Citi also offers the Costco Anywhere Visa Business Card. It earns the same cash back as the personal card: 5% on gas at Costco, 4% on other gas and EV charging (sharing the same $7,000 a year limit), 3% on restaurants and travel, 2% at Costco and 1% on everything else. So the calculator above works for it too.
The difference is employee cards. There's no fee for authorized users, but Citi says each employee must have their own Costco membership to get a card on the account. Like the personal card, there's no annual fee while you have a paid Costco membership. See Citi's Business Card page, and Costco Business Centers if you buy for a business.
Common questions
Does the Costco Visa extend the warranty?
Not anymore. Citi's card page lists Damage & Theft Purchase Protection but no extended warranty. Costco itself still extends TVs, computers and major appliances to 2 years; see the Costco warranty, explained.
When do I get the cash back?
Once a year. Your reward certificate for the previous year comes with your February statement. You can use it at a U.S. Costco warehouse for merchandise or cash, but not online, and it expires on December 31 of the year it's issued.
Is the Costco credit card worth it?
If you'd pay it off each month, usually yes: there's no annual fee with a paid membership, so any cash back is a gain. The calculator above shows how much, given where you spend. It pays most for people who buy gas at Costco and eat out or travel. If you'd carry a balance, interest would likely cost more than the cash back earns.
Is it hard to get the Costco credit card?
Citi doesn't publish a minimum credit score. You can check whether you pre-qualify on Citi's site with a soft inquiry that doesn't affect your score, before you apply.
Does the card have an annual fee?
No, as long as you have an active, paid Costco membership.
What do I need to get my reward?
An active Costco membership, an open card account, and more than $1 in rewards from the year before. If you close the card before the February certificate is issued, you can lose the rewards you've earned.
Why did a gas purchase only earn 1%?
The 4% rate is for "eligible gas". Which purchases count depends on the merchant category code the gas station is given under Visa's rules, not on what you bought, according to Citi's card terms. Citi pays only 1% for gas or EV charging at some superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs other than Costco, and a station coded as something else can earn 1% too. Your purchases over the $7,000 yearly gas limit earn 1% too. If a regular gas station shows up wrong on your statement, call Citi and ask.
What doesn't earn cash back?
Citi lists balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, money orders, wire transfers, lottery and gaming purchases, interest and fees, and returned purchases, among others.
Is there a Costco business credit card?
Yes, the Costco Anywhere Visa Business Card by Citi. It has the same cash back rates as the personal card. Employees can get cards at no extra fee, but each one needs their own Costco membership.
How is this different from Citi's and Costco's calculators?
Citi's calculator estimates the card's cash back but leaves out the Executive 2%. Costco's rewards calculator applies a flat 2% for the card and 2% for Executive to one purchase total. This calculator uses the card's separate rates for gas, dining and travel, Costco and everything else, applies the $7,000 gas limit, and adds the Executive reward against the $65 upgrade cost.
Is the Executive reward paid the same way?
No. The Executive 2% is a separate reward from Costco, issued with your membership renewal statement two to three months before you renew.
